More Than Just Cutting Branches
Tree pruning is both an art and a science. Done correctly by a professional arborist, pruning improves tree structure, promotes long-term health, reduces risk and enhances a property's aesthetic and safety. Done incorrectly, it can cause lasting damage — or even kill a valuable tree.
RVZ's tree pruning services are delivered by professional arborists who understand tree biology, structural mechanics and the specific requirements of each species. We don't simply cut — we prune with purpose, following international arboricultural pruning standards (BS 3998 / ANSI A300).

Our Tree Pruning & Maintenance Services
Crown Thinning
Selective removal of branches within the crown to increase light penetration, air circulation and reduce wind resistance — without changing the overall tree shape.
Crown Reduction
Reducing the overall size of the tree canopy by cutting back to appropriate pruning points. Used when trees have outgrown their space or create infrastructure conflicts.
Crown Lifting
Removal of lower branches to provide clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings and sightlines. Essential for urban street trees and estate driveways.
Deadwooding
Removal of dead, dying, diseased and structurally compromised branches to reduce risk of failure and prevent spread of disease through the canopy.
Formative Pruning
Pruning young trees to develop strong, well-spaced branch structure and correct poor form early — preventing structural problems in later life.
Maintenance Pruning
Scheduled periodic pruning to maintain tree form, health and safety. Includes multi-visit contracts for residential estates and commercial properties.
Hazard Pruning
Urgent removal of specific hazardous branches or structural defects that pose an immediate risk to persons or property.
Tree Removal
Safe removal of trees using professional climbing, sectional felling and rigging techniques. Includes stump grinding options and complete site clearance.
Estate Tree Management
Ongoing management contracts for residential estates, wine estates and commercial properties — covering all trees on the property under a structured annual programme.

Tree Pruning FAQs
The optimal pruning time depends on the species. Deciduous trees such as oaks, planes and maples are best pruned during winter dormancy when the tree is not actively growing and disease spread risk is lowest. Evergreens can generally be pruned year-round, avoiding the hottest summer months. RVZ provides species-specific pruning advice for your property.
Crown thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy to increase light penetration and air movement without reducing overall tree size. Crown reduction reduces the overall size of the canopy by selectively removing branch tips to appropriate pruning points — used when a tree has outgrown its space. Both are precision operations that should only be performed by professional arborists.
Yes. Improper pruning — including topping (removing the entire top of a tree), flush cuts (removing the branch collar), over-pruning and pruning during the wrong season — can cause irreversible structural damage, stimulate excessive growth, create disease entry points and significantly shorten a tree's lifespan. Always use a professional arborist.
Protected or significant trees listed under the National Forests Act or municipal by-laws require a permit for significant pruning or removal. RVZ can assist with permit applications and provides the required arborist report. We are familiar with the requirements of the City of Cape Town, Stellenbosch Municipality and all other Western Cape municipalities.
Deadwooding is the removal of dead, dying or diseased branches from the tree canopy. It is important for safety (falling dead branches are a significant injury and property damage risk), for tree health (removing diseased material prevents spread) and for aesthetic purposes. RVZ recommends annual deadwood inspections for all mature trees on managed properties.
RVZ can prune and remove trees of any size using professional climbing, aerial access and rigging techniques. Our teams use industry-standard equipment including Bandit wood chippers for efficient and clean site management. We have capacity for large-scale commercial and municipal tree works.
